The Upper Hand

SCULPTURE, LAMP DESIGN

Inspired by the dramatic forms human hands can make, and their formal relationship with trees, The Upper Hand tells a story of greed and “Taker Culture.” This lamp was an exploration of material and of storytelling through furniture.

Breakdown

The backstory of this project is closely related to the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. The hands grabbing for the light, the power, represent the Takers of our society, and the sole hand grasping and crawling away from this chaos and greed represents the Leavers. The geometric carvings are self-referencing and meant to show the spectacle of this all, how we, as a society, may put these Takers on a pedestal while ignoring and devaluing the Leavers.
